What Is a Noindex Tag?

A Noindex tag is an instruction in a webpage’s HTML or HTTP response that asks search engines not to include that page in their search results. The page can remain accessible to visitors and may still be crawled. A noindex instruction controls search visibility, while access restrictions control who can open the page.

Key Takeaways About Noindex tag

  • It controls search inclusion, not visitor access.
  • Search engines must discover and process the instruction.
  • It is not the same as robots.txt blocking.

How Noindex tag Works

People gather around a laptop while one points at code and another writes notes beside a “Noindex” card

The Noindex tag appears in a page’s robots meta tag or in an HTTP response header. A search engine that processes the instruction can leave the URL out of its search index. The page can still load for people who follow a link or enter the address directly.

A noindex tag differs from robots.txt, which gives crawling instructions at the site level. Search engines generally need to access a page to see its noindex instruction. Removing the tag allows the page to become eligible for indexing after the page is crawled and assessed again.

Expert Note

When we review a law firm website, we check the page source and response headers for noindex instructions. We then compare those instructions with the page’s purpose, internal links, sitemap inclusion, and search visibility goals before recommending a change.

Noindex tag in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Melbourne family law firm may have a private campaign landing page that supports an advertisement but should not appear in organic search. We may assess whether a noindex tag suits that page while keeping public service pages eligible for indexing.
